The act of ordaining or setting apart is a way of publicly launching persons into their God called ministry. Ordination does four things on behalf of the church and the persons called.

It confirms the persons call. If God calls, He also equips a person for the ministry and leads the Church to affirm that call in the person. This is shown in the spirit of the old hymn “Go preach my gospel said the Lord; bid the whole earth my grace receives. He shall be saved that trusts my WORD and be condemned who’ll not believe. I’ll make you and ye shall prove my gospel true, by all the works that I have done, by all the wonders ye shall do.”

Second, Ordination sets the person apart for service. This act bestows the association and church’s encouragement, prayers, support, and blessings on the person as he prepares for service.

The ordination publicly notifies other churches of the person’s call to a special in the ministry. Churches may then feel free to make use of the person as a minister of the gospel.

Finally, ordination gives legal status to the person as minister. It is a requirement, in most states, to perform funerals, weddings, and the administering of the Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 9-16-17 reads “For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: For necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me if I preach not the gospel.”
